Weeeeelll... I hasn't lots of characters... only one was actually officially posted here, and others are still in big concept. Helen has alot of characters. XD
Probably would be useful... but it has mass either... and probably easily damaged. Usually membrane has lots of nerves and capillaries... so... damaging of it can cause lots of trouble and pain. one of downsides of membranes.
Yes your right, although membrane would be highly responsive and extremely adaptable in flight it would be sensitive, but I believe replacing a heavy meaty tail with a light membrane tail would offer more advantage than disadvantage, but not having anything to see it working on its only my educated guess XD
Ah... I see, your point is to reduce weight of tail and ad extra "hang-glider device" for standing in air longer. Probably can help. My dragons have several different mechanisms for flying such as traditional wings, light bones and weight, electromagnetic pulses from muscular andkinetic force of biomatter itself (I'm still thinking about whole conception of last two variants... but I probably stick with them too)... Not sure if that will be enough to lift dinosaurs-like creature in sky, but I hope it'll work... ofc for reducing of weight I really should make my dragons not too physically strong, but probably fast enough... and probably not the best fliers. Just trying to make it balanced too.
Yeah... Membrane should be better... but feathers has own benefits too.
Yes well I have a lot of interest in this subject so I like to research flight anatomy etc ^^ An interesting fact for you seeming as your interested in membranes; I don't know if you know much about pterosaurs and how their wings work (similar to bats, but different in unique ways) but many palaeontologists think that the diffrence between feathers and membrane is actually the reason pterosaurs died out and birds lived. Like you say, membranes are very sensitive, perfectly adapted for flight, but fragile. So when climate change came and creatures had to fight to survive the pterosaurs would probably have been the first to go. Although there is much evidence to suggest the pterosaur would be a much more advanced flyer than a bird, its advantage in the air was unfortunately its downfall, and the hardy protective insulating feathers of the bird won the fight of survival so its why I gave Rabian a coat of feathers on the top of his wing to protect his membranes ^^ it would only partly help though. So I guess you have to choose...advanced flight but fragile wings, or hardy wings and average flight skills? Guess it depends what you want your characters to be like
Yeah... Looks like you have lots of knowledge about wings and birds. And you are right about that. Membrane would be more effective in holding air due of higher density... I think it even can be used to swim... but limited... but as I said it's more fragile and has bigger impact on it's owner while hurted or damaged, bad regeneration compared to "renewing" of feathers. It's more vulnerable to freezing and flying objects in storm, etc. It acts better in rain than feathers(unless you are a duck or somebody with some biological "waterproof" protection) but not too much due sensitivity. And it's a bit heavier than feathers, because of density and full pack of nerves, capillaries, extra bones("fingers" of wing's "arm" to hold and control membrane) ets, while feathers are pretty light because of lower density and air between feathers, less bones and less of skin.
well... That coat would help but not fully. Larger objects flying in air still can hurt membrane. Powerful stream of air still can hurt it too. Freezing... will be a bit better handled than with "naked" membrane but it's still will be very sensitive... And still bad regeneration, but now need to restore lost feathers too. I think it would be kinda balanced, But I never saw any of animals with both membrane and feathers in the same time so it's hard to prove it's effectiveness. Unfortunately.
Well that's hard what I want... Lightwingeds lived in very cold conditions, and has not bad biological protection of it like warm blood, continuously changing and producing heat "biomatter"("second blood(circulatory) system"... the main thing of their unique existens... "heart of energy" is my old calling of it).. but they has scales and membranes. that creates lots of interesting theories about their evolution in their society. (Main problem is as I said that they are obviously a warm blooded reptilians with unique organism on very cold planet, which makes lots of theories about that) I don't remember told about it or not. about three different theories(actually there's alot of them but only three has huge support in lightwinged's society) about which they continuously argue?(just like humans, arguing about "How they appeared on earth?" like Darwinian evolution for example, etc). But I think they are not great fliers because of very harmful condition on planet... but their wings and ability to fly didn't degraded too.
Now I have the time to finally comment on this masterpiece:
I absolutely adore how the design turned out. You not only mastered it to draw this chick a marvelous and PERFECT anatomy, you also gave her a unbelievably cool colour design and an overall very unique look. The way you drew her head and neck is so adorable as well as her filigree stance. I really want to see more of her in the future!
Thhank you thank you *bows* shes mai fav character atm, because, SHES YELLOW. I'm obsessed with those kind of stork neck now, and curly horns are epiiiccc I will draw her. Dunt yer worreh! Thanks again <3
